School crews across Maryland got to work early Wednesday to clear snow-covered campuses. While Wednesday marked a snow day for Baltimore City students, there was still much work to be done on school grounds, including at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. "We actually pre-salted all of our parking lots, our driveways and many of our sidewalks Monday evening, and then came back Tuesday morning," said Scott Washington, the district's executive director of facilities. Disrupting the school day is not an easy decision. "When those decisions are made (on a) two-hour delay, (or to) close, whatever it is, it's made with a full team effort and with the safety of the staff and students in mind, and a lot goes into that process. It's not arbitrary at all." |
SNOW DAYS :
Some Maryland school districts are out of built-in days off. So, here's what they're doing for future snowstorms for the remainder of 2025. Crews got to work plowing, salting and shoveling at Poly before sunrise Wednesday. Washington said it takes much planning, communication and coordination. "(There's) probably about 30 pieces of equipment that we actually have out on all the different sites. But the bottom line, I think, is we have over 160 buildings to maintain, we have four regions that they're broken into. So, we'll be out all day long," Washington told 11 News.

Michael Hawkins, who drives a salt and plow truck, said that after 24 years, he has snow emergencies down to a science. "I definitely have a passion for what I do," Hawkins told 11 News. "I just love trying to help out the community, help the kids out." The busier-than-usual season continues in Baltimore City, and crews will continue to prepare for and adjust to the winter weather for the rest of the season.
