CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (KWCH) - Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels threw three interceptions, including a pick-six in the final seconds of the first half, as the Jayhawk offense struggled in a 23-17 loss at Illinois on Saturday. Daniels finished with just 141 yards on 18 of 32 passing with a pair of touchdowns. He was intercepted on the opening drive of the game, the final drive of the first half and again late in the third quarter in Illinois territory. While Devin Neal ran wild for 101 yards on 14 carries, the Illini managed to limit the rest of KU’s runners. Daniel Hishaw tallied just 39 yards on 7 carries, and Daniels was limited to 35 yards on 10 attempts. After both teams kicked field goals in the opening 18 minutes, KU finally found pay dirt when Daniels found Luke Grimm, who twisted and top-tapped in the back of the endzone for a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. Illinois answered with a 50-yard field goal and the INT return for a touchdown in the final 65 seconds of the half. Lawrence Arnold hauled in a 13-yard touchdown as Daniels scrambled for a 17-13 lead. Illinois drove the field and capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard rushing score to regain the lead. The Illini tacked on a field goal in the last minute, forcing KU to attempt to drive for a touchdown to no avail. KU outgained Illinois 327-271 and held Illinois to just 79 yards on the ground, but the hosts turned the interceptions into 10 points. The Jayhawks return to Children’s Mercy Park on Friday to host UNLV at 6 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s Guaranteed Rate Bowl.
