WASHINGTON (7News) — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to hold a press conference on Monday to discuss the next steps after the U.S. Senate passed a bill that would restore more than $1 billion to the city's budget, which was cut in the federal spending bill Congress had to approve to avert a government shutdown.

Mayor Bowser is expected to hold the press conference at the Wilson Building. Watch it here at noon.

This move comes after the Senate passed a Republican-led government funding bill last week, narrowly averting a midnight government shutdown with a 54-46 vote. The resolution initially repealed D.C.'s current year budget, forcing the city to revert to the previous year's funding levels, despite raising most of its own revenue. Bowser warned that this would necessitate a $1.1 billion spending cut over a few months.

Shortly after, the Senate unanimously approved a bipartisan bill aimed at preventing severe budget cuts to the District of Columbia. The newly passed legislation, approved by voice vote, would allow D.C. to spend its budgeted funds, reversing the cuts.

The cuts to D.C.'s budget would lead to tens of millions of dollars being taken from key public safety and education services, including almost $4 million from D.C.'s Office of Unified Communications (OUC), which runs the 911 call center.

Although the legislation passed the Senate, it still has to pass the U.S. House of Representatives. D.C. leaders and public safety advocates are closely watching the House, as they consider the bill. Meanwhile, D.C. has already begun preparing for potential funding cuts.

This is a developing story. Stay with 7News for the latest updates.
