U Street Music Hall spares patrons the long lines and ridiculous cover charges; this underground venue caters to a funky dance party fueled by groovy music.
U Street Music Hall, known by some locals as “Uhaul,” was rated by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the ten best dance cubs in America in 2013, and for good reason. U Street Music Hall has only bar stools for seats, because the rest of the venue is all dance floor and a DJ booth. Uhaul doesn’t have a dress code or VIP bottle service - the venue is owned by local DJ Will Eastman and focuses solely on bringing the best electronic music acts to town and creating a funky dance party environment. Since opening in 2010, the 500 person capacity basement club has become a favorite spot for many. That's mostly thanks to its state of the art Martin Audio Sound System that pumps out the best national and international house, techno, bass and electronica tunes every week. U Street Music Hall is literally an underground venue; the 12,000-foot basement dance floor and two bars may sound small in comparison to other dance clubs, but the absence of tables and lounge chairs are ideal for a ripe dance party. Uhaul has been recognized by The Washington Post and Washington City Paper - it won The City Paper’s 2012 reader’s choice “Best Dance Club” award and 2013’s reader’s choice awards for “Best Dance Floor,” “Best Place to Find an Underground Party,” and “Best Underground Venue.” Uhaul has also been recognized by the Washington Post express in 2010 as “The Best Place to go Dancing” and anyone who has been there would most certainly agree. Uhaul is frequented by partygoers who want to hear good music and dance, rather than be seen to be seen. Uhaul regularly hosts local underground DJ’s such as Fort Knox Five, Sam “the Man” Burns, DJ Tom Blondet and internationally known and acclaimed DJ’s like Mark Farina, Miguel Migs, and Josh Wink. The venue has also on occasion hosted acclaimed Hip Hop acts such as Mobb Deep and Grandmaster Flash of the Furious Five. On Friday nights is the venue’s weekly event, “Red Nights” which is a tribute to the now defunct afterhours Club Red and features artists and DJ’s who regularly performed at the legendary venue. Many of Uhaul’s events are free before 11pm for 21 and older, while 18-21 can get in for a reasonable cover charge typically between $10-20. U Street Music hall also hosts early shows, and it is not uncommon for live bands to perform some nights at Uhaul before the DJ’s take over.
In addition to being a great place to go out dancing, U Street Music Hall started a foundation in 2011 which supports music education, events and programs for Washington DC area youth. As the official website says, “U Street Music Hall is for dancing, not sitting.” Between its regular schedule of cool DJ’s, Hip Hop, live Bands and support of local music, U Street has become and continues to be one of the bright spots of music and dance in the Metro DC area.
