Four people were killed and seven others were injured in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon when a car crashed into a charter bus east of Wenatchee.

Here’s what we know.

What happened?

A Toyota Camry tried passing traffic heading westbound on Highway 28 near Rock Island Dam Road around 1:40 p.m., according to a memo from the Washington State Patrol. The Camry hit an oncoming Northwestern Stagelines charter bus that was going eastbound.

A 66-year-old male bus driver from Spokane died in the crash, along with a 17-year-old female driver and a 17-year-old male passenger in the Camry, both from East Wenatchee. Another bus passenger later died at the hospital.

Seven others, ages 24 to 71, were injured in the crash and transported to local hospitals.

A Chevrolet Traverse SUV was also in the crash but had minor damage. The bus and the Camry were totaled.

Melanie Ahlstedt, a State Patrol spokesperson, said there were no new developments as of Monday morning. The identities of those who died in the crash have not been released as of Monday afternoon.

What do we know about the bus?

Jacob Price, owner of Spokane-based bus company Northwestern Stagelines, said the crash occurred during a scheduled route between Seattle and Spokane. He said there were about 20 people aboard the bus.

Price said in an email that the crash was caused by a driver trying to pass while traveling at an “excessive speed.”

“Sadly, our talented and dedicated driver was among the fatalities …” he wrote. “We have and will continue to work closely with the Washington State Troopers and WSDOT as we seek to understand additional details regarding this tragic event.”

What do we know about Highway 28?

Highway 28 is 135 miles long and stretches across Central Washington from Wenatchee to Davenport, Lincoln County. The crash occurred at a stretch of the highway with two lanes and opposing traffic.

There were 11 collisions on Highway 28 near Rock Island Dam Road in 2024, according to State Patrol data. Sgt. Jermaine Walker said none were fatal.

However, a 61-year-old East Wenatchee man died Saturday in a fatal crash on Highway 28 near Rock Island, local radio station KPQ reported.

State Patrol told KPQ the man “ suffered a medical emergency, crossed the eastbound lane and struck the bridge on the eastbound shoulder.”
