CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears signed a proposed constitutional amendment to protect reproductive healthcare.

She included a handwritten note saying, “I am morally opposed to this bill; no protection for the child.”

As president of the Senate, she was legally required to sign the bill to keep the legislative process moving.

54th Virginia State Delegate Katrina Callsen says, it’s harmful to Virginians who rely on these protections.

“Whoever holds the governorship should certainly respect that passed legislation, especially bipartisan legislation,” Callsen said. “There’s no need to provide additional commentary about it not being good legislation. We need to be protecting women’s right and access to reproductive health care and keep politicians out of the doctor’s office.”

The amendment still needs a second legislative vote next year before Virginia voters decide.
