Four Democratic lawmakers have arrived in El Salvador, where they intend to continue pressing for the release of a Maryland resident who was wrongly deported to a prison in the Central American country.Representatives Robert Garcia of California, Maxwell Alejandro Frost of Florida, Yassamin Ansari of Arizona and Maxine E. Dexter of Oregon landed on Sunday. They are hoping their trip will focus more attention on the Trump administration’s lack of action after the Supreme Court ordered the government to facilitate the return of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia.“While Donald Trump continues to defy the Supreme Court, Kilmar Abrego Garcia is being held illegally in El Salvador after being wrongfully deported,” Mr. Garcia said in a statement. “That is why we’re here — to remind the American people that kidnapping immigrants and deporting them without due process is not how we do things in America.”The lawmakers’ visit follows that of Senator Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland, who traveled to El Salvador last week. After two days of resistance from the government of President Nayib Bukele, Salvadoran officials allowed Mr. Van Hollen to meet with Mr. Abrego Garcia face to face.Mr. Abrego Garcia, who was born in El Salvador, had been living in Maryland with his wife and three children when he was detained last month and deported. He was sent to El Salvador along with more than 200 other detainees the U.S. government accused of having ties to the MS-13 and Tren de Aragua gangs. While he entered the United States illegally, a judge had ordered in 2019 that Mr. Abrego Garcia not be deported to El Salvador after determining that he would face grave danger there.Following his deportation on March 15, a federal judge in Maryland ordered his return to the United States, a decision that the Supreme Court unanimously upheld in part on April 10.The Trump administration originally admitted that Mr. Abrego Garcia was sent to El Salvador by mistake, but has since said his deportation was lawful and appropriate. Officials have also said that he is no longer in American custody and that it is up to Mr. Bukele to return him.Mr. Van Hollen said that Mr. Abrego Garcia had recently been transferred out of a prison known as the Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT. On Sunday, the Justice Department filed an update in federal court saying that Mr. Abrego Garcia had been moved to a detention facility called Centro Industrial in Santa Ana, El Salvador. The four members of Congress are scheduled to meet with U.S. Embassy officials and human rights groups in San Salvador, the capital, on Monday. They say that in addition to calling for Mr. Abrego Garcia’s release, they are there to find out the status of others deported from the United States and detained in El Salvador.
