Broncos are keeping their faith in young quarterbacks Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. Will they be enough to lead the Broncos to victory?
Despite many fans' lack of faith in the two young quarterbacks, head coach Vance Joseph remains steadfast in his faith in Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch. After weeks of being questioned of his confidence in the two young men, Joseph sees his previous statements starting to become a reality, even more so now that Tony Romo has officially retired from football after announcing it on Tuesday, March 4. "We have two young guys that we feel really good about," said Joseph, "I've said it 10 times, this team won nine games last year with two rookie quarterbacks. They probably could have won 10 or 11. We feel strong about our two young guys." Now, the question is: where does this leave Denver? Who will join Siemian and Lynch? As Joseph has said many times before, the Broncos are interested in adding a third quarterback to add more depth to their roster. If they bring on a veteran, it'll be a younger veteran. It could also be a rookie from the class of 2017's pool. Regardless of who the Broncos add, what if this third quarterback outplays the other two? Well, according to Joseph, "If he's that good, absolutely." However, that is not their main focus at the moment. "...Right now, we have a one and two in our building." The Broncos could be interested in having quarterback No. 3 a guy keen in making his return, or someone like Austin Davis, who has only played 13 games during his five-year career. Or they could add Christian Ponder, who joined the Broncos temporarily in 2015 as a replacement for Peyton Manning when he injured his foot.
There's also the draft to take into consideration, but it seems unlikely they'll use any of their 10 picks on quarterback. Denver has other priorities that need to be met in the draft, specifically an offensive tackle, defensive line depth, maybe a fourth cornerback, perhaps a tight end or a slot receiver, or even another inside linebacker or running back. That's not to say they won't draft a quarterback. If one is selected, then the pick will most likely get pushed back to a later round.
"We have to go into the draft with an open mind as far as taking the best play for ours needs. It's a combination of both. It's not only the best player, it's your need. If there is a tackle there that has a first-round grade from us, that's awesome," said Jospeh. "The third (quarterback) is going to fall to us. Whether it is the draft or free agency, that won't be hard to do."
In the meantime, Siemian and Lynch will take charge and grab hold of the reins.
Joseph is putting all of his faith in these young quarterbacks. But, do you? Also, who do you think is the most qualified to take on the position of third quarterback? Are there any players you're drawn to in particular? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments and let's get the conversation started!
