Denver International Airport has seen a record year in passenger travels and it’s only expected to increase over the Christmas holiday. See what they’re doing to help lessen the load.

The Denver International Airport is projected to see 10,000 more passengers than average over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, prompting them to bring on extra staff to help curb TSA wait times. Both the TSA and the K-9 force will have more workers than normal, but there are ways passengers can help alleviate the congestion, too. Believe it or not, they do not want you to miss your flight (the Frontier Airlines debacle is completely unrelated to the TSA). They would rather everyone make it to their destination as smoothly as possible. If you’re not sure what items are allowed into the airport, you’re encouraged to tweet the TSA (@AskTSA) a photo of anything you may have a question about. Wrapped presents may have to be unwrapped, so be mindful. The less clutter you have in your bags means the quicker your items can be cleared. Firearms, knives, tasers, and mace are all prohibited, yet DIA collects a hefty amount each month. These types of items - real or not - cause a complete lane stop and delay screening until anything considered a threat is neutralized. While you’re waiting in line it’s extremely helpful to TSA and everyone else that you pay attention and have these things done before you get to the bins. That way you can just pack your stuff up and walk through. If you’re flying out on the Friday before Christmas, prepare yourself. Dec. 23 is expected to be the busiest day of travel, topping off the estimated 58 million passengers who have passed through DIA in 2016.
