Tutoring and support services aim to help fill learning gaps for middle and high schoolers.

Douglas County Libraries (DCL) announced last week it will begin offering its new Study Hall + Student Support service for middle and high school students who may need extra help with online learning amid COVID-19.

The free service will provide dedicated space for students in grades 6 through 12 to work on school assignments and get extra help from qualified tutors on-site in math, language arts, and science. The topic-specific study halls will be available Monday through Thursday mornings from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, and Parker branches. Each of the branches will specialize in a subject: math at Castle Rock, language arts— including both English and Spanish—at Highlands Ranch, and science at Parker.

DCL said the study halls can help students who need a quiet place to study away from siblings and distractions and provide schoolwork assistance that parents might not be able to provide.

“We hope that these study halls and the professional tutors will help support parents and teachers who are stretched thin with the pressures of blended learning and all that it entails for schools and families,” said Kerri Morgan, DCL’s special events department head.

Students must register in advance at DCL.org/learning-lab to attend the sessions, which are limited to accommodate social distancing guidelines. DCL said it adheres to all health guidelines and mask requirements, and all tables and surfaces in the rooms will be sanitized between sessions.

DCL's Learning Lab will also open registration soon for traveling mini-camps designed for students from age 5 to 10 at various DCL locations. Each session will provide enrichment beyond basic school subjects and give kids an opportunity to experience hands-on learning.
