ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) — Recently released drone footage captured two boys, aged seven and nine, armed with a loaded firearm during a standoff with police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in February.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) released the nearly six-minute-long video showing the two boys dressed in Minecraft and Star Wars-themed clothing while standing behind a covered unit. The handgun is clearly seen in their hands as they pass it between one another.

The boys are seen looking around and moving to different sides of the unit as if to avoid detection. Eventually, the boys are surrounded and detained by deputies.

The Albuquerque Journal reported that deputies fired a less-lethal round to distract the boys, and one of the kids raised the gun and pulled the trigger. Sheriff John Allen told the Journal that the gun malfunctioned, and had it gone off, “our deputies could have taken deadly force.”

The BCSO said their drone allowed them to manage the high-risk situation. They were able to get the gun away from the kids without anyone getting hurt.

The Journal quoted Allen as saying the BCSO had been called to the home at least 50 times due to issues with the boys and their family.
