JACKSON, Ky. (WYMT) - Former President Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance’s victory in the presidential election will lead to an Eastern Kentucky connection to the White House.

Vance has a well-documented family history in the mountains, specifically in Breathitt County. Vance wrote about his Appalachian experience in “Hillbilly Elegy,” which led to polarizing opinions.

For Breathitt County Library Director Stephen Bowling, Vance’s rise in government shows how someone can overcome hard circumstances.

Bowling said Vance’s role in the White House could lead to a larger spotlight on the mountains as he can address some local issues.

“Bringing industry back to the United States. Making sure rural areas receive the same opportunities to advance and grow as the urban areas do. Looking at ways to bring those principles to the mountains of Eastern Kentucky,” Bowling, said.

Kenneth Patrick, who owns a business called “Campbell’s This and That” in Jackson, said he hopes the spotlight can also lead to customer growth.

“Hopefully with him having ties here, that would get more people to come and visit, maybe, and it’ll help us grow a little bit, maybe some tourism,” Patrick said.

Approximately 78 percent of voters in Breathitt County chose the Republican ticket in the presidential race.
