TOWANDA — Blunt force head injuries, including a fractured skull, caused the death of the girlfriend of a former Penn State football player, the Bradford County Coroner’s Office says. Alyssa Denise Boyd, 23, of Bloomsburg, was killed Friday night when an ATV driven by Julian Fleming struck a deer. Deputy Coroner Albert Ogden said Wednesday her death was ruled an accident. The deer jumped in front of the ATV onto Painter Lick Lane in Columbia Township in western Bradford County about 8:10 p.m., state police said. Boyd was pronounced dead at the scene while Fleming, 24, of Elysburg, was treated at Guthrie Troy Community Hospital. He returned home the following day. The investigation into the accident is continuing, and no additional information will be released at this time, state police said. They previously said neither Fleming nor Boyd was wearing safety equipment. A dead deer was discovered near the scene, they said. Boyd, according to her obituary, was expected to graduate in December from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. The Central Columbia High School graduate was described as a standout athlete, having competed in soccer, basketball and track. She recently started playing golf. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Bloomsburg. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. with a service to follow. The Heller Funeral Home of Nescopeck is handling the arrangements. Fleming, a standout wide receiver at Southern Columbia High School, played three years at Ohio State before transferring to Penn State, where he concluded his collegiate career in the playoff loss to Notre Dame in January. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent but was released when he failed his physical due to hip and back injuries.
