You don't need to travel far to uncover a piece of Virginia's history; ours is a state that has seen more than its fair share. Yet even still, there are some places that seem particularly storied. Sailor's Creek Battlefield is one such place, not only because of its tragic and complicated history but also because it's among the most paranormal places in Virginia . Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park is a 321-acre park in central Virginia that holds a significant place in history. On April 6th, 1865, nearly 7,700 men were either killed, wounded, or captured in battle. This was the battle that ended the war in Virginia and would eventually cause General Lee to surrender at Appomattox just three days later. Despite its significance in the American Civil War, the battlefield is still relatively unknown. Those visiting the park today can learn more about this pivotal event. Throughout the year, the staff presents living history programs and in-depth discussions on the war's impact on this region of Virginia. Another major point of interest is the Overton-Hillsman House, which is believed to have been built in the 1770s. The one-and-a-half-story structure was built with hand-hewn timbers, wooden pegs, and hand-made shutters crafted from heart pine. During the battle, the house was used as a field hospital, and one of the most significant battles in the war raged on. Tours of the house are available upon request. When you arrive, be sure to stop by the visitor's center for additional information about the park. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and can help make recommendations as well as provide important historical context. Additionally, there are a few well-maintained trails that will guide you through the battlefield. As you explore the property, take time to read the historic signs along the way. These provide key details and fascinating information about what happened on that fateful day. As you learn more about the park, you'll understand why it's considered among the most haunting—if not haunted —places in Virginia. Countless soldiers were buried here in mass, and there are countless unmarked graves throughout the park. It's chilling to think such a violent battle could be fought in such a beautiful place.
