Monie Bug, a children's clothing line, is launching in Aurora on Sept. 30, with a focus on "ethical fair-trade fashion for festive imaginations."
When Heather Green and her family traveled to visit her husband's relatives in India in February of 2015, the airline lost their luggage. Finding themselves in a remote southern village and without clothes for their small daughter to wear, Green's sister-in-law got to work, and just an hour later, had completed a beautifully tailored party dress. And the idea for Monie Bug -- a children's clothing line that would bring "sustainable change and empowerment through fair working conditions in India" -- was born. [gallery size="medium" ids="24200,24197,24201"] On Saturday, September 30, Green and her husband Aneesh Mechery will launch the Monie Bug clothing line at a launch party and fashion show in Aurora. Kids will model the latest designs -- all handmade by the Mecherys' family members in India -- and the celebration will be an all-out party with everything from gifts and giveaways, balloon designs and door prizes, to cupcakes, wine, and a nacho bar. The first 100 attendees will receive a swag bag of goodies, as well.Right now we have three ladies -- my husband’s sisters -- designing and making the clothing, and we have intentions to add at least three more in 2018 -- hopefully more if sales can support it," Green told OCN, adding that the small village in India has very few working opportunities. "The more clothing we sell, the more people we can help by empowering them to create beautiful children’s clothing for fair wages; thus, helping their entire families."[gallery columns="2" size="medium" ids="24194,24199"] The vision of the organization is to promote "ethical fair-trade fashion for festive imaginations" through reasonably priced toddler dresses (currently sizes 2T–5T), but the hope is to expand the business into boys' clothing and more sizes as time goes on.
After we first got home (from India), life set in and we really didn’t pursue the business until a couple months later when moms were continually commenting on the dress and asking where we purchased it. So we said, 'let’s do this!'" Green said. "A year and a half later, we are finally launching. It took well over a year to get things lined up enough to actually launch."The launch party will be Saturday, Sept. 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. at CrossFit Banshee, 380 S. Potomac St., Aurora, CO 80012, and is open to the public. The clothing can be purchased online through Monie Bug's website after the launch. For more information, check out their website!
