VIRGINIA (WDBJ) - As the winter weather continues to hit many of our hometowns, public safety officials are urging drivers to be cautious due to falling trees. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to drivers, “Please be aware that trees are still coming down throughout the county, which may block roads unexpectedly. You could be driving and not see a tree fall in front of you or on your vehicle.” The Grayson County Sheriff’s office states, “Due to downed trees, numerous secondary roads throughout the county are currently impassible. VDOT is working diligently to clear the roadways, and motorists are advised to exercise caution while driving today.” Roanoke County Fire and Rescue states, “Roanoke County is experiencing multiple power outages, downed trees, and blocked roadways. Please be aware that trees are still coming down throughout the county which may block roads unexpectedly.” The Lynchburg Fire Department stated they have responded to multiple calls of trees falling within the county, including a house that was severely damaged by a falling tree. The Blacksburg Police Department states, “We’re aware of the downed trees impacting power lines, blocking roadways, and causing widespread power outages throughout the town and into the county. Public works crews are actively working to clear each area as quickly as possible. Please avoid affected roads and stay safe.” Safety officials advise residents to reserve 911 for emergencies.
