BOSTON. (WGGB/WSHM) - It’s Opening Day at Fenway Park and the Boston Red Sox are set to take on the St. Louis Cardinals. First pitch is expected to happen shortly after 2 p.m. Friday and, by midday Friday, the stadium was filling up fast. The Red Sox started the season with a seven-game road trip, where they won three games and lost four. That places them tied for fourth in the American League east standings. There may be a lot more games to be played at Fenway, but one New Jersey family makes it a tradition to come every opening day and, on top of that, they’re the first ones to enter the ballpark. Travis Gonick has taken his oldest son since he was six months old and they make the four-and-a-half hour drive every year. “First ones, we get here around eight in the morning, play catch, and then stand on line for a few hours,” he explained. We also asked if Gonick and his three sons stay for the whole game and he said, for the amount of money they spend, they stay until the last out. We’ll have more from fans and hear from a Springfield dad taking his own sons to opening day, starting at 4 p.m. on ABC40.
