Tragedy struck in Winter Haven yesterday morning as two vehicles collided head-on on State Road 60, resulting in one fatality and leaving another person with serious injuries. According to the WFLA , Polk County Sheriff's deputies and fire rescue responded to the scene near Logistics Parkway at approximately 4:25 a.m., where they discovered 35-year-old Orli Dagoberto Argueta Sanchez of Eagle Lake, deceased within his 2004 Nissan Sentra.

The other vehicle involved, a 2022 Hyundai Sonata, was operated by 27-year-old Sergio Nino Ramirez of Lake Wales, who sustained serious injuries from the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital. Witnesses shared with deputies, that Ramirez had been driving the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of SR-60 which led to the head-on collision. As a result of the incident, the eastbound side of SR-60 remained closed for nearly four hours as the investigation took place, WTSP reports.

The circumstance of the collision and potential criminal charges against Ramirez are currently under review, as the Polk County Sheriff's Office continues the investigation into what occurred that morning, The Tampa Free Press noted. Officials have yet to release details on why Ramirez was driving in the wrong direction, but have acknowledged the ongoing nature of the case and the likelihood of charges being filed against him.

Authorities are still investigating the details. The crash caused major delays for morning commuters as the road was closed for an investigation. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward.
