CORDOVA, Illinois (KWQC) - Crews at Constellation Energy’s Nuclear Power Plant in Cordova battled a fire in an electrical room around 4 a.m. Thursday, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The incident prompted officials at the plant to declare an “Unusual Event” - the lowest of the U.S. NRC emergency classifications.

According to reports submitted to the NRC, the fire was quickly extinguished by the plants onsite fire crews.

Officials with the NRC said no injuries were reported and no harm to public health or safety was reported.

As is required with any emergency at a nuclear power plant, the NRC was notified along with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, FEMA and local emergency management officials.

The NRC confirmed to KWQC that the cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation into the cause continues.

Quad Cities Clean Energy Center operators quickly extinguished a small fire on a battery Thursday morning in a Unit 2 electrical room located outside of the reactor building. There were no injuries to plant personnel during the fire and no impact to public health or safety. The fire was extinguished by the station’s onsite, highly trained fire brigade. Unit 2 remained safely operating at full power, while Unit 1 was offline and not impacted by the event. The cause of the fire remains under review.
