KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Today is a First Warn Weather Day as the potential for strong to severe storms is still possible, mainly for this afternoon. Models are now indicating we could stay locked into rain through mid to late morning, decreasing the severe weather potential. However, with the chance for severe weather on a day when a lot of people are going to be out and about for Easter, we wanted to make sure to elevate the message as it COULD be a stormy afternoon. The First Warn Weather Day is in place from 1–7 p.m., as this will be the window for impactful strong to severe storms across the area. From the Storm Prediction Center, the enhanced risk, level 3 out of 5, has shifted towards the east, with only Marshall and Sedalia in the best areas for severe weather. The Kansas City metro is under the slight risk, level 2 out of 5, and areas north of KC are under a marginal risk. If the instability increases in the atmosphere this afternoon, all severe weather modes will be possible, including an isolated tornado or two. IF the atmosphere is able to recover this afternoon, then areas south of I-70 will see the strong to severe storms first between 1–3 p.m. This severe weather chance will be moving north along with the system. So, Kansas City could see the strong/severe storms between 3–5 p.m. Areas far north or east of KC will see the activity between 5–7 p.m. before it moves out. Aside from the severe weather risk, there is a flood risk for heavy rainfall for today for areas south and east of Kansas City through 7 p.m. tonight. These areas could see upwards of 1.5–3 inches of rain.
