Flags in Kansas are being flown at half-staff from sun-up to sundown on May 15 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order May 13 directing that flags be flown in that manner to recognize that observance, which pays tribute to local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.

"Every day, Kansas peace officers put their lives on the line in service to their communities and fellow Kansans," Kelly said. "Peace Officers Memorial Day is a solemn reminder to acknowledge and appreciate their sacrifices and commitment."

The observance was created after Congress on Oct. 1, 1961, authorized the president to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on Oct. 1, 1962.

President encouraged governors to have flag flown at half-staff

In a proclamation issued May 12, President Donald Trump encouraged governors nationwide and other officials to have the flag flown at half-staff.

“I stand in steadfast solidarity with those who defend our freedoms and the families who love and support then,” the proclamation read. “We pray for those who grieve the fallen and pledge that their lives, legacies, and sacrifices will forever be remembered by our grateful Nation.”

What's the difference between half-staff and half-mast?

The difference between half-staff and half-mast depends on where the flag flies.

The terms are often used interchangeably, but half-staff refers to a flag hanging halfway up on a flag pole on land, while half-mast pertains to a flag flying halfway up the mast on a ship at sea.
