Flags in Kansas are being flown at half-staff from sun-up to sundown on May 15 in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order May 13 directing that flags be flown in that manner to recognize that observance, which pays tribute to local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. "Every day, Kansas peace officers put their lives on the line in service to their communities and fellow Kansans," Kelly said. "Peace Officers Memorial Day is a solemn reminder to acknowledge and appreciate their sacrifices and commitment." The observance was created after Congress on Oct. 1, 1961, authorized the president to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. President John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on Oct. 1, 1962.
