Two Florida Republicans hoping to win special elections to Congress this week have some background on the energy and environment — one of them notably drives a Tesla.

Randy Fine, a state senator who will resign Monday to comply with state law, is running in the 6th District to replace former GOP Rep. Mike Waltz, who was tapped to be President Donald Trump’s national security adviser. Fine has a reputation as a brash and outspoken lawmaker but said in a recent interview that he owns the electric vehicle produced by Elon Musk’s company.

“I drive a Tesla, but I never try to tell people that I don’t use fuel,” he said, arguing that “there is no such thing as clean energy,” calling such assertions a “myth.”

He’s assailed wind and solar energy but has had kind words for nuclear. He also led legislation making plastic straws more readily available in the face of local bans.
