WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Bishop Carroll’s softball team has been known to swing for the fences. The Golden Eagles won their 15th state championship last season. The program has seen so much success that it’s coached by the very players that helped it get to the top. With last year’s title, Carroll has now hoisted the trophy more than any other softball program in state history. To continue bringing that success, the Eagles looked to their past. “There’s players that play the game to know the game and there’s players that play the game to coach the game,” said pitching coach Kelsey Unruh, who played for Carroll’s 2011 champion. Unruh, Kaitlyn Arion, Lauren Quintana and Lauren Unrein are the players now coaching with Carroll who helped the Eagles win state titles. Quintana won four between 2012-15. “I just wanted to come back and give back to a program that gave so much to me,” Quintana said. Coach Steve Harshberger relies on the positive mindsets of former players who have reached the pinnacle. “It’s such a thrill to watch these (players) and learn from them and watch them coach,” Harshberger said.
