Helena Pueyo’s time with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun has ended.

She was waived Friday morning, along with the team’s other draftee, Tiayanna Jackson of Kansas.

Pueyo, who was the Sun’s second selection in the draft at No. 22 overall, played sparingly in the preseason loss, 82-79 to the New York Liberty on Thursday night. She found her way onto the court late in the fourth quarter, attempted a 3-pointer and missed.

The highlight of the game was the video from Arizona women’s basketball of the two former Wildcat teammates, Pueyo and Esmery Martinez, who is now on the Liberty, guarding each other .

Martinez had an efficient outing, with five points, three rebounds and a steal in eight minutes.

WNBA teams have until Monday to finalize their opening day rosters. While teams can have 12 players each, many ride with 11.

The WNBA is expanding to San Francisco next season, and there have been reports – most notably from the Chicago Sun Times’ Annie Costabile — that the league will be expanding to Toronto in 2026 . Commissioner Kathy Engelbert said in April “Our plan and goal is to get to 16 teams in the next few years. We’re at 13 with our Golden State team.”
