May is typically the peak of severe weather season in both Kansas and Missouri, so this week on “Rain or Shine” the FOX4 Weather team sat down with Jonathan Kurtz of the National Weather Service. He shared with Michelle Bogowith how meteorologists at their Pleasant Hill office work together as a team to monitor not only radar, but also the larger regional weather environment when issuing severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings. The full episode of “Rain or Shine” is available to watch on demand exclusively on the WDAF+ App. Download for free on Roku, Fire, and Apple TVs now! Before warnings are issued though, the ingredients have to come together for severe weather. Alex Countee, Jacob Lanier, and Karli Ritter talked about the acronym “SLIM.” Which stands for shear, lift, instability, and moisture, the four primary ingredients needed for severe thunderstorms. Joe Lauria then shared the different types of watches and warnings that can be issued for storms. The warnings issued by the National Weather Service have thresholds, including quarter size hail or 58 MPH damaging winds. “Rain or Shine” is a weekly weather show, exclusively on WDAF+, featuring all five meteorologists from the FOX4 Weather Team.
