WBFF (Baltimore, Maryland) — It’s been nearly two years since Maurice Anderson, 24, of Washington, DC was shot and killed during what his family said was supposed to be an enjoyable night out in Fairfax County, Virginia. Anderson’s picture now serves as a reminder of a life lost to gun violence, and a case that remains unsolved. Anderson was one of two men shot at the Build America Plaza in Fairfax County, Virginia after investigators said a fight erupted in the parking lot on May 7, 2023. Anderson succumbed to his injuries a short time later at an area hospital. The second victim suffered critical injuries but survived. “It’s really shocking that such a thing can happen in this community,” said a store owner whose business was struck by stray bullets. “We hate to see anybody get hurt. It’s really worrisome.” In the days following Anderson’s murder , the Fairfax County Police Department released surveillance images of the believed shooter and later identified him as Javon Antonio Reid. A warrant was issued for his arrest for second degree murder, and two firearms-related offenses. What local authorities hadn’t revealed is that at the time of Anderson’s murder, Reid was already on federal probation, according to federal authorities. Reid remains on the run still today, and is now also wanted by the United States Marshals Service. in a federal indictment after agents conducted a months-long investigation into a PCP distribution conspiracy in Prince George’s County, Maryland. In the federal statement of charges, investigators said Reid was caught selling drugs including Heroin, PCP, MDMA (ecstasy), and Oxycodone pills. Records show Reid later accepted a plea deal from federal prosecutors and pleaded guilty to two counts within the indictment including conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute controlled substances, and distribution of controlled substances. In 2019 Reid was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, followed by five years probation. “Due to his conviction Reid was also prohibited from possessing a firearm,” said Deputy Marshal Al Maresca, with the US Marshals Service. While out on probation Reid is accused of opening fire during an argument in a parking lot in Fairfax County, Virginia, and killing Maurice Anderson. It’s a crime authorities say he has yet to answer to still today. The double shooting turned murder triggered a violation of Reid’s probation, and weeks later a second warrant was issued for his arrest. “It is in the interest of public safety that we locate Reid so he can answer to these crimes. Reid is wanted for second degree murder, as well as for violating the terms of his federal probation,” said Maresca. Reid stands at about 6’0” and weighs approximately 200 lbs.
