A Metro Vancouver woman is speaking out after she was the victim of a racist incident on the SkyTrain this week.

Elise Song told Daily Hive that she had been taking the SkyTrain from Waterfront to Richmond-Brighouse Station on Thursday, just before 11 p.m.

At around 10:53 p.m., she said a man got on the SkyTrain at Marine Drive Station and appeared to “shove” a South Asian woman as he entered.

He then took a seat in front of Song, who is Chinese Canadian. At the time, she was wearing a medical mask.

“Once seated, he began verbally harassing me about the medical mask I was wearing, demanded ‘Where are you from?’ and ordered me to ‘go back’ to my country while stating his own Scottish ancestry,” Song said.

She managed to record the incident on her cell phone.

Warning: This video contains profanity, which may not be suitable for some viewers.

In the video, the man says something inaudible before telling Song to “take the mask off.”

She replies telling him to “f*ck off.”

“Get out of here. It’s my country… You don’t know where you’re from. Go home,” he demands.

Song attempts to stand up for herself, telling the man he is a “pathetic racist.”

The man continues to complain about her mask, as Song keeps on filming.

He then declares that he is from Scotland. “We formed this county,” he tells Song.

“This is Canada, so go back to your country then,” she says, adding that he should “look up online who formed this country.”

At one point, a fellow passenger steps in and tells the man that “people can wear what they want” and that he’s an “immigrant too,” referring to his Scottish roots.

“Nobody agrees with you,” adds the passenger.

The man exits the train, and Song thanks the other passenger for speaking up.

Song, who lives in Richmond, says she takes the SkyTrain about once a week to commute to and from downtown Vancouver.

“I have never experienced anything like this before, so I was shaken and in total shock,” she said.

Song contacted Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) to report the incident.

Sgt. Dustin Szakacs with MVTP confirmed that investigators have been assigned to the file and have conducted a follow-up with the victim.

“We take incidents such as this very seriously, and as such, a full investigation is currently underway in hopes of identifying the unknown male; all investigational avenues are being pursued,” he stated.

Song said the altercation has left her angry, “but also motivated.”

“The incident was a stark reminder that racism exists even in places where I normally feel safe and respected,” she shared.

“I want to share my experience to raise awareness so others feel empowered to stand up for themselves, respond safely, and help when they witness harassment.”
