(WKYT)—For Today’s Good Question, July asks: We have neighbors in Lexington that have a pet raccoon. He is adorable! Where can we get one? You can’t get one. There are a few states where it is legal to own a raccoon, but Kentucky isn’t one of them. Lisa Jackson with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife tells me that raccoons are not a species that are allowed as pets in Kentucky. They are on a list of animals that require a captive wildlife permit to possess. They are in the same category as black bears, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, otters, and wolves. You have to get that permit before getting the animal. There is a list of requirements, including how that animal is obtained and the enclosure it has to be kept in. Fish and Wildlife also says it is illegal to remove young wildlife from the wild. That permit differs from a wildlife rehabilitation permit, which allows people to rescue orphaned, sick, displaced, or injured native wildlife to release the wildlife back to its natural habitat. The bottom line is that raccoons are not allowed as pets. However, you could get something like an alpaca, camel, or bison. Those are allowed in Kentucky.
