Three Walmart stores—in Dorchester, Frederick, and Wicomico counties—will have designated drive-up locations dispensing self-tests three days a week.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced Friday that Walmart would be joining the ranks of coronavirus testers in the private sector. Three Walmart stores—in Dorchester, Frederick, and Wicomico counties—will have designated drive-up locations dispensing self-tests three days a week, weather permitting. Walmart pharmacists and trained medical volunteers provide the test materials (according to safe distancing protocols) to individuals that make an appointment.

A New Phase in the Fight Against COVID

This week, Governor Hogan directed the Maryland Department of Health to begin coronavirus testing for asymptomatic individuals who may have been exposed to the virus. This new phase in testing follows a critical milestone in Maryland's coronavirus efforts—200,000 tests have been administered and 3.5 percent of the state's population has been tested. Hogan now says the state has the capacity and supplies to offer testing to Marylanders who may have been exposed to the disease, even if they do not have symptoms.

In addition, Hogan used an emergency order to authorize any licensed pharmacist in Maryland to directly order and administer COVID-19 tests.

Hogan said in a press release:

"As Maryland continues to dramatically expand testing availability and broaden the criteria for COVID-19 testing statewide, we are excited to be forging new partnerships with private sector companies like Walmart. With the addition of test sites at some of our Walmart stores, we are continuing to make significant progress on our long-term testing strategy for the state."

Jennifer Hoehn, Walmart Public Affairs Director for Maryland, responded in kind:

"Walmart is part of the community, and we are proud to help support the expansion of COVID-19 testing in Maryland during this unprecedented time. We are grateful to our associates who keep our stores running, our pharmacists who support these testing sites, and to state and local officials as we work together to open the site and help our community."
