Loveland, Colorado, is known for its thriving art community. With talented artists, sculpture parks, and decorated utility boxes, it's no wonder that the city would plan a Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt in October 2020. You may guess that these aren't your ordinary scarecrows. Artists have channeled their unparalleled flair to creating unique scarecrows across the city.

This event is free and open to the public. Pack your camera and head out in search of your new favorite scarecrow. The city invites participants to take selfies with each scarecrow and submit photos to their social media contest. 

And there are prizes! For contest participants, prizes include a Loveland Winter Family Staycation (night's stay at the Courtyard by Marriott, gift certificate to Promenade Shops at Centerra, gift certificate to Loveland Laser Tag, and a gift certificate to Red Robin), Chick-fil-A meals, and Time Emporium Escape Room experience. Per the contest rules, entries must be made by October 31, 2020. Little-Known (or Widely-Known) Facts About Scarecrows

• Scarecrows were first used in Egypt (more than 3,000 years ago!) to accomplish their namesake: scare the crows off of crops.
• In Nagoro, Japan, the population is only 35 while there are more than 350 scarecrows.
• Birds are pretty smart and become used to the scarecrows, making the same scarecrow ineffective over time.
• Greek farmers often created scarecrows to look like Priapus, who was the son of Dionysus and Aphrodite. Priapus was quite ugly and lived near fields. When he lived in the vineyard fields, he scared away the birds and enhanced the crop.
• The Urchfont Scarecrow Festival, in the United Kingdom, started in the 90s and attracts more than 10,000 people each year.
