VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A cornerstone of Virginia Beach is set for a grand re-opening Monday morning.

The Virginia Beach Fishing Pier already opened its gates to visitors earlier this week in a quiet soft re-opening.

The piers walkway and railing are deemed safe, repaired from the damage caused by a car going off the end.

Rescuers spent days searching for the vehicle, often delayed by bad weather. They eventually found the car and the body of a 57-year-old man inside . It is a crash that left a mark in the minds of locals, still maintaining a memorial for the man next to the pier.

With the city moving forward, they are set for a grand-reopening at 10 a.m.

D Nachnani, a spokesperson for the family that owns the pier, said the event will feature mayor Bobby Dyer welcoming anglers back to the pier, and a ribbon cutting.
