The weather this week is expected to be hot and humid in Chicago and central Illinois , with heat indexes likely to surpass 100 degrees this weekend. Scattered storms are also in the forecast today and tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service .

Severe storms possible this week



Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible today and tomorrow in central Illinois and Chicago, with chances of damaging winds, small hail, lightning strikes and localized downpours.

Storms are expected in the afternoon and evening today and tomorrow in Chicago, with possible tornados and a Level 1 flood risk on Wednesday. In Central Illinois, storms are likely from 5 p.m. to midnight Tuesday and 2-10 p.m. Wednesday, with a chance of urban and small stream flooding .

Heat index to possibly surpass 100 this weekend



Heat and humidity levels are forecast to rise this weekend and into early next week in Chicago, as well as all of central and southeast Illinois. The heat and humidity may make it feel 100+ degrees for several days in a row, with temperatures staying warm in the high 70s at night.

Be sure to hydrate, avoid outdoor exercise, wear light clothing and remain in air conditioning whenever possible during these times.

Central Illinois forecast



Tuesday: Slight chance of showers and thunderstorms (mainly in the evening) with highs between 86 and 90 degrees. Severe thunderstorms possible west of I-57.

Wednesday: Thunderstorms likely throughout the day with highs of 81-86 degrees. Thunderstorms may be severe.

Thursday: Mostly clear and sunny with highs of 81-86 degrees.

Friday: Mostly clear and sunny with highs of 86-90 degrees.

Saturday: Sunny with highs of 90-96 degrees and a heat index of 105.

Chicago forecast



Tuesday: Chance of storms during the day and evening with highs of 87-91 degrees.

Wednesday: Possibly severe storms likely throughout the day with highs of 77-84 degrees.

Thursday: Chance of storms mainly along the Wisconsin state line with highs of 79-84 degrees.

Friday: Mostly sunny during the day with a chance of thunderstorms at night mainly along Wisconsin state line and near the lake. Highs of 85-88 degrees.

Saturday: Sunny with highs of 91-94 degrees. Possible heat index over 100.
