CHICAGO — Celebrating Fat Tuesday with a paczki or two is a Chicago tradition, and there’s no shortage of bakeries catering to demand this year. The Polish doughnuts, pronounced “pownch-key,” are a holiday staple. They’re made from enriched dough and a bit of grain alcohol, covered with powdered sugar, and filled with jam, custard or fruit. This year, Paczki Day, as it’s known to enthusiasts, falls on Tuesday (aka Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday), and dozens of Chicago-area businesses are already inviting customers to pre-order. Most businesses expect the pastries to sell out, so order ahead if you can. Block Club has compiled a list of bakeries, cafes and restaurants that plan to sell paczki on or before Fat Tuesday. Most of the spots in this list will begin selling paczki to walk-in customers on Friday, and some will have them available for one day only. A few businesses will be open as early as 4 a.m. to accommodate demand. (Polish bakeries on the list often sell paczki year-round.) Although it’s not technically a spot where Chicagoans can go pick up their paczki, we’d be remiss not to mention the Tuesday special at The Violet Hour, available while supplies last: The Polly Paczki, an $18 cocktail featuring a blend of cognac, strawberry liqueur, Amaro Abano and lemon, “garnished with a mini paczki for a sweet, buttery finish.” Are we missing your favorite paczki spot?
