Boys basketball



Merrick Rillstone led three double-figure scorers with 15 points as the defending state champion Seahawks pulled away from a two-point halftime lead Friday night in Reston to keep their repeat hopes alive. Toshiki Elston finished with 12 points and Jordan Scott scored 11 for South Lakes (23-4). Landstown finished 21-4. South Lakes plays Woodson for the state title March 15 at 6:30 p.m. at VCU’s Siegel Center.

Kaylen Chilton buried a 3-pointer and made a transition layup in a 15-second span that helped the Cavaliers, of Fairfax, take the lead for good in the first quarter. Chilton’s flurry helped Woodson (24-5) erase a 10-9 deficit, and Ryan Corallo added a layup to put the Cavaliers in front 16-10 with 1:27 left in the first period. Woodson led 18-12 after the first quarter and took a 28-25 lead into halftime. Oscar Smith, the Region A champion, finished 24-2.

The Patriots, from the Charlottesville area, earned a berth against Green Run for the state championship at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at VCU.

Three days after eliminating defending champion Hampton, the Blue Devils went to Winchester and overcame a seven-point deficit to earn a four-point victory over the Judges.

The Raiders will face Varina, one of their Capital District rivals, for the Class 4 state championship at 8 p.m. Friday at VCU in an arena that’s less than a 20-minute drive from both schools. Atlee beat Varina 66-59 for its first region title.

The Blue Devils defeated the Mustangs from Falls Church.

The Harrisonburg-area Trailblazers advanced to the finals on Saturday, March 15, at 1 p.m. at VCU.

The Justices, one of the nation’s top teams despite their relatively small student population, breezed past the Shenandoah Valley’s Bulldogs.

The G-Men won a clash of southwest Virginia teams to face the unenviable task of meeting nationally ranked John Marshall at 8 p.m. Thursday at Siegel Center.

The Broncos were victorious against the Red Devils. Franklin, despite some internal conflict on its team, led 11-6 after one quarter, 25-19 at the half and 31-25 after three quarters.

The Maroons from Wytheville dominated to earn a spot against Franklin at VCU on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Marcqell Freeman led the Chesapeake-based Spartans to victory with 22 points. Falcon Green and Talon Wray followed with 17 and 11, respectively.

Girls basketball



The Yellowjackets decisively defeated the Wolverines in Manassas.

The Lancers will face B1 Osbourn Park on Saturday, March 15, for the championship at 4:30 p.m. at VCU.

Jizelle James led the Cavaliers with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals. Micah Ojo recorded 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Ellery Giddens added nine points, three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Princess Anne advanced to the final in pursuit of a third consecutive championship.

The Colonels from Roanoke defeated the Skyhawks in Chesterfield County and advanced to the final against Princess Anne at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at VCU.

The Mustangs came up short against a Roanoke-area squad in a seven-point loss.

The Pride will face the Salem Spartans at 6 p.m. Friday for the championship at VCU.

The host Clippers fell to the Yellow Jackets of Fredericksburg.

The Cavaliers, from near Roanoke, joined James Monroe in the championship game Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m. at VCU.

The Justices from Richmond defeated the Eagles, giving John Marshall both of its basketball teams in championship games.

The Warriors, from the state’s southwest corner, will meet John Marshall on Thursday, March 16, at 6 p.m. at VCU.

The Shenandoah Valley’s Bison were victorious against the Bulldogs from Lawrenceville.

The Maroons won a close clash of southwest Virginia teams and will face Buffalo Gap for the championship Friday at 12:30 p.m. at VCU.

Baseball



Jack Bonney prevented any hits or runs over five innings and struck out eight. Ryan Watson hit a solo home run in the third inning.

Lacrosse



Jackson Jensen led the Saints to victory with five goals and two assists.

Softball



The Gators were led by Haleigh Murphy, who struck out 13 through five innings. The Gators collected 14 hits, with Murphy and Katelyn Balka going 3 for 3. Peyton Moran and Cora Smith belted their first home runs of the season.
