The Avon Lake senior put on a clinic last week on his home mats to win the sectional title. Jack Valerino looks poised to get over the hump for the Shoremen and join his teammate in Columbus. Led by its strong lightweights, Elyria also looks to make some noise in Perrysburg. Bennett Wachter (106) is the Pioneer to watch.

Elyria Catholic’s duo of Maddox Moos (106) and Jacob Hill (138), Firelands’ D’Mari Campbell (138) and Rocky River’s Dylan Heffron (150) are a few area wrestlers to watch trying to make a state appearance.

However, the good news is that the Raiders had a great showing at Waynedale last weekend. Bodey Gibbs’ state title chase continues and the rest of the Raiders look to keep the momentum going. Fairview has six district qualifiers in its own right led by James Zellmer (126).

The same can be said for Josiah Longo at 165 pounds. … Keystone’s Jordan Folmer (215) is the lone area returning state qualifier in this district. The Wildcats should send two wrestlers to Columbus with Folmer and Jonathan Gould (190).

The Pioneers have several others that can make some noise. Emilie Conley (120) and Seraiah Jackson (170) won individual sectional titles for Elyria. … As for Avon Lake, Rejan Al-Hashash (155) continues her road to win back-to-back state titles. The senior is undefeated this season. Destiny Cabot (100) and Mallory Zadel (110) are also in a good spot to make it back. Vermilion returns three state qualifiers from a year ago in Cora Frederick (130), Emily Stiner (135) and Marissa Torres (140).

Mentor District
