The Brief

Barnes says expect clouds Friday afternoon and evening before the snow starts close to midnight. Barnes says the snow will come down fast, but will quickly come to an end on Saturday morning. It won’t amount to a lot, he says, and is expected to wrap up by sunrise.

"Although we are expecting some snow across the area, it won't be terribly heavy," Barnes said. The snow is not expected to impact the Friday evening commute.

What locations are under the Winter Weather Advisory?

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 7 p.m. Friday evening to 7 a.m. Saturday for portions of western and southern Maryland, central and northern Virginia, and parts of northeast, southeast and northern West Virginia.

What time will it snow on Friday and Saturday?

The snow is moving into the D.C. area from west to east on Friday night. It is expected to impact the region close to midnight.

How much will it snow this weekend in DC?

Western regions (including Garrett County, MD and parts of West Virginia): 1-3 inches, with higher localized amounts on higher ridges.

Central regions (including areas around Front Royal and Fredericksburg, VA): 1-3 inches.

Eastern regions (including areas around Ocean City and Salisbury, MD): 1-2 inches.

Will the snow stick to the ground?

It will be cold enough for any snow that falls to stick. The National Weather Service says roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.

Be prepared for slippery roads and slow down and use caution while traveling, the NWS says. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of falling and injury.
