Getting your eating back in check after the holidays doesn’t have to be torture.
The holidays are over, and you’re probably noticing the toll they took on your wallet and the scale. Heading to the gym is a must, but so is adjusting your diet. After noshing on cookies, appetizers, and heavy holiday dishes all day and night, switching to a regular menu might be a little difficult. We asked Vanessa Spiller, a certified nutritionist and personal trainer to give us some tips. Vanessa is a part of EMP180°, an official partner of the Washington Capitals.
Nix Those Hunger Pains
When the party ends and you go back to a regular eating plan, be sure to incorporate a lot of protein in your diet. Protein is more satiating and helps to build and support muscle. When your body is fueled properly, it will be more apt to use that extra fat for fuel.
Don’t Worry If You Can’t Go All In
Start small by adding healthy foods to the menu. Structure your day so you are fueling your body every few hours. Start your day with a lean source of protein such as eggs. Research shows that adequate protein keeps your blood sugar in check which helps to eliminate cravings. If you aren’t sure what to eat, consider working with a qualified nutritionist who can help structure a personalized nutrition plan.

Get to the Gym
First, before you begin any workout routine, be sure to consult with your doctor. Make goals that are specific and attainable. Consider buying a fitness tracker and working out with a friend, to keep you accountable. Find an activity that you enjoy—that way you will be less inclined to skip workouts.
Finally, don’t think; just do. Don’t wrestle with your thoughts at 5:30 a.m. Once your feet hit the floor, you’re on your way!
