You love hosting people, but your apartment in Washington, D.C., can’t exactly be described as spacious. So what do you do?

No worries. Use these tips to throw a fantastic summer soiree in your home, no matter the square footage.

Set up a drink station on a bar cart.

Chances are, if you’re one of those many young professionals living in an apartment in D.C., you don’t really have room to set up a large serving table. But almost any space can fit a bar cart. Utilize it to its full capacity. Make a pitcher of your famous sangria, mojito, or whatever summer cocktail you specialize in, and stack a pile of plastic tumblers next to it (pro tip: don’t use anything with stems -- too much opportunity for breakage). Have a rosé or a white wine on ice, as well as a tray or two with snacks. People can help themselves to what they like. If you have outdoor space -- no matter how small -- use it.

Outdoor space is hard to come by in apartment living, but if you have it, flaunt it. Even if your balcony can only fit two people at a time, open the door and let the fresh air in. Add some plants for décor and set up as many chairs as you can to let people know they’re welcome to hang out there. This indoor-outdoor environment will get people in the summer partying mood. Keep the decorating simple.

While decorating is a lot of fun and really brings a party to life, decorations also take up space. So, keep it simple, and think about vertical space. Hang up some streamers, and add plants/flowers and lighting on top of your shelves, end tables, and other surfaces you know you’re not going to use for the soiree. Add some appropriately-sized and scented candles around your home to give it the ambience you want.
