Maryland represents the Big Ten and Texas the Southeastern Conference as top-10 teams from arguably women’s basketball’s two most powerful leagues battle for supremacy in Newark. The Terrapins are one of four Big Tens ranked in the top-10 of the most recent Associated Press national rankings, while the Longhorns are one of three from the SEC.
Texas slid two spots in those rankings following a loss to No. 2 South Carolina (67-50) that snapped a nine-game win streak that included a pair of ranked victories over No. 9 Oklahoma (80-73) and No. 18 Alabama (84-40). Maryland is also working through its first loss of the season to No. 4 USC (79-74) after starting the season with 14 straight wins.
