An important matchup with playoff implications and one of the best players of all time is set for Tuesday night in the U.S. capital as Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals play host to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings head to Washington in the midst of a fierce playoff battle. After a statement shutout victory over the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, Detroit has some confidence heading to a four-game road trip this week.

Coming into Tuesday, the Wings are sixth in the Atlantic Division, two points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

While the Capitals are competing to see if they can snag the best record in the NHL, Ovechkin is going after a record of his own. With 34 goals this season, the Russian winger is chasing down Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record of 894 goals. Ovi has 887 in his Hall of Fame career, and has a good chance of breaking it this year. With 15 games left, Ovechkin has to score a little over a goal every other game in order to break the record before the end of the regular season.

The Capitals hold the best record in the East, tied with the Winnipeg Jets for the best record in the league.
