It took six years to get enough people to sign up for them, but the long-awaited Dr. Seuss license plates are finally going “from there to here, from here to there” on the backs of “little cars” throughout Massachusetts.

The specialty plates feature Cat in the Hat, one of the many whimsical cartoon creations by Springfield native Theodor Seuss Geisel. The Springfield Museums is home to The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum .

“We’re thrilled with the response to the Dr. Seuss plate and can’t wait to see them across the state,” said Kay Simpson, president and CEO of the Springfield Museums.

Dr. Seuss plates can be purchased for a passenger car registered in Massachusetts through the Registry of Motor Vehicles . Specialty plates cost $40, plus standard registration fees, according to the RMV.

The first time the plates are sold, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation gets $12 and the museums get $28, The Republican reported last year. Each time the plates are renewed — which must happen every two years — the museums get the whole $40.

License plate proceeds will support the museum’s “mission to promote literacy and learning,” according to a press release from Springfield Museums.

As of last March, the museum had received 785 pre-orders for the license plates after campaigning since 2019, The Republican reported. Having crossed the state’s 750-plate threshold for a minimum order, the specialty plates went into production and have started to be released this month, the Museums said.

“We are so very grateful to the hundreds of people who placed orders for these plates over the years and have patiently waited for us to reach this incredible moment,” Simpson said.
