The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) says a giant boulder closed down Colorado's Million Dollar Highway on Wednesday morning.

At the time of this writing, U.S. 550 Red Mountain Pass is closed between Silverton and Ouray.

CDOT said the boulder will require "downsizing" to remove it from the road. Crews began working first thing Wednesday morning.

There is no timeframe on when the highway will reopen.

CDOT recommends that travelers consider the alternate route via CO Highway 145 through Telluride.

The Million Dollar Highway is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway.
