A brand-new wine festival exclusively celebrating Canadian wineries is coming to Toronto this summer, with unlimited samples and local eats. While countries like Italy, France and even New Zealand tend to hog the spotlight on the world wine stage, Canada just so happens to be home to some great wineries of its own, and it’s only fair that they get their time to shine, too. Enter Elbows Up Coast-to-Coast Wine Fair , which is taking over Fort York this July for one whole day spent saluting the country’s best grape growers. Co-opting the hockey phrase made popular by Canadian comedy legend Mike Myers as a response to tariff threats from below the border, the brand-new wine festival was born out of the desire to uplift boozy beverages cultivated on home turf. At the inaugural installment of the festival, you can expect to explore over 25 different wineries based everywhere from BC’s Okanagan Valley to Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley and in between. Geary Avenue favourite Paradise Grapevine is set to be in attendance (try their Party Favour skin contact wine and thank me later), alongside other Ontario hometown heroes like Hidden Bench , Rosewood Estates and Tawse , while wineries including Nova Scotia’s Lightfoot & Wolfville and BC’s Ursa Major are among the out-of-town visitors. In other words, prepare your liver. You’ll be wanting all the samples you can get your hands on. Since it’s no good drinking on an empty stomach, there’ll also be a droolworthy lineup of local food vendors on-site to pair with your drinks, and it’s as exciting, if not more, as the wine vendors. Among the confirmed food vendors at the festival are Leslieville’s Ricky + Olivia , serving up playful takes on high-brow dishes (think Big Mac steak tartare and PB & J-inspired chicken liver mousse) and Gerrard’s Good Cheese, which is offering artisan cheese plates and oversized focaccia sandwiches to soak up all that Pinot. The festival runs in two separate sessions, the first from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the second from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., so you can choose when you’d like to attend, but either way, your ticket price includes unlimited samples, access to food vendors and a special keepsake glass to remember all the good times. Tickets are currently going for just $35 until June 21, at which point they go up to $50, so you’ll want to act fast if the wine festival is your cup of tea, so to speak.
