Famous author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s Owl Farm has some big changes in store.

What Thompson once referred to as his 42-acre “fortified compound” in Woody Creek now has plans to be renovated into a museum and writer’s retreat. In charge is Thompson’s widow, Anita Thompson, who also plans to brand her late husband’s favorite strains of weed with the “Gonzo” name. Thompson is accredited for “Gonzo journalism,” serving his years as an untraditional journalist who never claimed to be unbiased. He was a rebel of sorts, known for his love of drugs and alcohol almost as much as he was known for his pieces. He has been hailed as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, with his works featured in publications such as Rolling Stone and “Random House”. The Owl Farm served as Thompson’s home, where he raised peacocks and wrote articles until his death in 2005. Some of his more famous novels are "Hell's Angels" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". After saving 6 strains that Thompson himself smoked, she partnered with a cannabis company to help grow them for the public - and the Gonzo name. Both the retreat and the on-site museum will be by appointment only, but she says they’re also considering a public museum in one of the cities nearby.
