But when it comes to confronting climate change and its role in exacerbating the extreme weather causing irreversible damage to his state, Scott’s critics say the Republican lawmaker is nowhere to be found. The dynamic has become a new line of attack from Scott’s opponents in the five weeks before Election Day, as the incumbent first-term senator fights for reelection against former Democratic Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Helene landed as Democrats started paying more attention to Florida and Texas — seen as long shots — as they struggle to keep control of the Senate next year.
