Efficiency for the masses ...

The Green Car Journal just announced its much-anticipated 2018 green car year finalists, and the list includes the 2018 Hyundai Ioniq. Competing models include the 2018 Honda Accord, the 2018 Honda Clarity, the 2018 Nissan Leaf, and the 2018 Toyota Camry. The announcement of the winner is scheduled for November 30 at the Los Angeles Convention Center inside the Technology Pavilion, where other green announcements will also be made.
So what makes the Hyundai Ioniq so good? Well, not only is it the first eco-focused vehicle to offer three different electrified propulsion systems in one platform (i.e., the Ioniq Electric, Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, and the Hybrid, but it does it with striking good looks, quality fit and finish, and America's best warranty. For the record, that's a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty. [gallery ids="27302,27303,27304,27305"]
The Ioniq is an important milestone in Hyundai’s commitment to global sustainability, marking a major step in the expansion of efficient, eco-friendly driving,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, corporate, product and digital planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Being named a finalist by Green Car Journal further highlights Hyundai’s leadership in bringing about a better way to drive.”
As for the actual green performance of the Ioniq, the all-electric version can take you 124 miles on a full charge, the plug-in hybrid variant will do 27 miles on electrons, and the hybrid achieves an industry best of 59 highway mpg. When the average American drives 29.2 miles per day, there's plenty of range with the electric models, and to put that 59 mpg (earned by the hybrid) in perspective, you could, in theory, get from downtown Denver to the Kansas border using about 3.1 gallons (more realistically four, but does that really matter?). How's that for a road trip machine? What are your thoughts? Do you like the new Hyundai? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments below!
