With everyone going out less and staying home more, the need for deodorant has gone down.

According to Unilever, one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies, the sales of personal care items (such as deodorant) have slumped. After all, with nowhere to go, who needs to get ready?

Sales of things like Axe deodorant, Dove soap, shampoo, etc. have declined, though hygiene products like hand sanitizer and home hygiene products have increased by double digits. Overall, the company reported a 0.3 percent decline in beauty and personal care products. Sales also fluctuated in different places in the world as product availability and supply chains were impacted.

However, sales of ice cream for home-consumption have jumped by 15 percent in the first half of the year—sales were higher at 26 percent between April and June. Out-of-home ice cream sales slipped by 30 percent. Unilever owns big ice cream brands like Ben & Jerry’s, Magnum, Breyers, and Popsicle, among others.

Unilever also reported that people have eaten more soup, used more pre-made meal kits, and used a lot more mayonnaise since the pandemic and shutdowns began. Foodservice sales overall were down about 40 percent, a direct reflection of how impactful the pandemic has been on in-person business.

Home care sales also increased, with a large jump in demand for household cleaners; the demand for these products rose worldwide over the last several months. It is, however, rather interesting that while personal hygiene has gotten a bit worse, home cleanliness and handwashing have gained in priority.

The report from Unilever sheds some light on what people have and have not been doing during shutdowns and as places and businesses slowly reopen. Though some have jumped at the chance to get back out there, there are plenty of folks who are more than content to sit at home, eat that delicious ice cream, and smell themselves.
