Check out these finalists and winning images submitted from all over the world. 

Smithsonian Magazine hosts a photo contest every year and gets thousands of images submitted from across the world. For 2019, they received over 36,000 entries from 145 countries and territories—and of those thousands of images, 60 were selected as finalists.

Smithsonian has held the contest for 17 years and opens it up to pictures in six different categories: Travel, People, Natural World, Altered Images, Mobile, and American Experience. 

The winners and finalists have all been shared on the magazine’s website, and they are really incredible to look through. At a time when we must stay close to home, these pictures give us a way to explore new places. 

The Grand Prize Winner was Jon Enoch, who submitted a photo of an unusual fish display in Hanoi, Vietnam, submitted in the Travel Category.

This photo (below) was captured after a home survived a tornado that decimated everything around it in Ellerslie, Georgia, USA. Taken by Matt Gillespie, the photo earned the top spot as the Readers’ Choice winner.
