The capital of the State of Maryland is a scenic and beautiful town along the banks of the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis is home to the U.S. Naval Academy, the Maryland State House, United States Sailboat Show, as well as brick streets lined with unique restaurants, bars and shops. Annapolis can be explored on foot easily and is known as one of the best places to live in the entire country. Of the many things to do in Annapolis, one of the coolest is a tour of the U.S. Naval Academy. The academy has been around since 1845, training and educating Navy officers and the Academy’s campus is rich in culture and history. The United States Naval Academy Museum is neat and home of the crypt of the father of the U.S. Navy John Paul Jones.
The United States Sailboat Show
The United States Sailboat Show is another fun thing to checkout in Annapolis. The show is the oldest and largest sailboat show in the world and attracts sailors from all over the world. Annapolis’ miles long dock turns into a showcase for some of the world’s most exotic and beautiful boats in the whole world. Whether you are interested in buying or just dreaming of what could be, they are worth seeing.
Maryland State House
Taking a tour of the Maryland State House is another fun visitor activity and like a time warp of sorts. Maryland’s State house dates to 1772 when it was built and remains the oldest state house still in use. At one time, the state house was the capital of the nation and is the place where the Treaty of Paris was signed, which put an end to the Revolutionary War as George Washington resigned as commander of the Continental Army.
Sailboat Races
On Wednesday nights, a fun thing to do in Annapolis is watching the Sailboat Races. Over 100 yachts gather Wednesday evenings from the latter part of April until the end of August for the races. Spectators follow the action in boats gathered down by the Spa Creek Drawbridge and from local waterfront watering holes and restaurant decks. The event’s regularity and locale in what is considered the “Sailing Capital of the World” makes for fierce competition and the presence of fast boats.
The United States Naval Academy-Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center
When Graduation ceremonies take place at the U.S. Naval Academy, the midshipmen dressed in white suits take part in the traditional hat throw. One of the highlights of the ceremonies is an air show put on by the world famous Blue Angels. The Navy’s fighter jet demonstration performs at every graduation and is something worth seeing.
The African American History of the Banneker-Douglass Museum
On a quieter note, the African American History of the Banneker-Douglass Museum has much to explore. Maryland’s official African American History Museum highlights two historical figures: Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist writer and the eighteenth-century mathematician, author and astronomer Benjamin Banneker, whose work has long been an inspiration in the push for freedom.
Rams Head
Lastly, visitors of Annapolis will want to check out the live music at Rams Head. Rams Head regularly hosts performances by nationally known touring musicians of every genre. The venue is an intimate space, the audience gets up close and personal to the performers and the chance to hear every note. The Bar is stocked with a wide variety of brews, cocktails and more, which the wait staff brings to the tables along with the tasty food.
While the things mentioned here sum up Annapolis well, there is plenty more that the town has to offer, particularly a virtually endless list of restaurants and brew pubs and just spots to sit and enjoy the waterfront and sea breezes. Annapolis is a large town with lots to see and do, all that the State Capitol has to offer is enough to keep visitors coming back for a very long time.
