The U.S. Department of Education recently announced it will resume collections on defaulted federal student loans. Now, the Illinois attorney general is warning borrowers to be on the lookout for scams. Scammers may contact borrowers through phone calls, emails, or letters—posing as loan servicers or offering fraudulent debt relief programs. He says the first step to protect yourself is to review your key information, including your loan servicer’s contact details, your login credentials, and the current status of your loan. Borrowers can check if their federal student loan is delinquent or in default by logging into their Federal Student Aid account at StudentAid.gov.
